
It intends to raise turbochargers to their full-electrical capacity. Competitors from other turbo manufacturers such as BorgWarner and Mitsubishi will soon be joining the in-house E-Turbo designs. Instead, the E-Turbo employs a larger electric motor to power a larger compressor at lower speeds instead of a partly-operated compressor, which enables the exhaust gases to turn the compressor partially, or completely, as rpm climb in a motor.
Basically, the turbocharger may now be bigger, expanding its utility in improving both power and efficiency while nearly eliminating turbo lags. In addition, the turbo engine may operate in the other direction.
If the turbo no longer is needed, for example when the driver slows down or begins to coast at speed, the spin-off turbo can be collected and fed into the battery of the car. Garrett has particularly developed the E-Turbo for use on the 48V systems in many manufacturing vehicles. This absorbs energy that otherwise would just be transferred from the exhaust pipe and significantly improved efficiency.
In addition, when the demands are made by the throttle, the energy generated can be utilized to spin the turbo again. Garrett points out that these efficiencies can enhance the fuel economy of a vehicle by up to 10 percent. Most of them can view 2-5% of the range but everything relies on how and in what format the E-Turbo technology is employed. The E-Turbo is also a great benefit on diesel engines for a reduction of up to 20 percent of NOx.
Motors are decreasing, but there are no power outputs and Garrett thinks the E-Turbo may help keep this trend continuing. Since the E-Turbo can operate on bigger turbines, it can keep cooler throughout the operation, so that smaller turbos will not have to cool down for longer usage.
Although several producers entered the e-turbo game, Garrett alone revealed its intended usage in the next car. We do not know, whose car, but it says that it’s a big manufacturer, and it’s not an experiment, but a production model. Jaguar Land Rover is our best option, given the two firms have worked together on comparable technology before.
The E-Turbo might change engine efficiency in the short term and lead to major gains for the industry.
