
While each will have a unique colour scheme, they will all have one common thread. Every car will have a turbocharger to improve engine efficiency. For decades, race vehicles have employed turbochargers. They’re also widely utilised to enhance operational economy in heavy-duty vehicles and to boost power to sports automobiles.
However, turbochargers are beginning to emerge beneath the hoods of more ordinary passenger vehicles. This is because the gadgets are a low-cost solution to increase fuel economy. Turbos may enable a four-cylinder engine create the same amount of power as a V-6 engine.
It’s part of a larger pattern of powertrain shrinking. Mechanical engineers are keen to capitalise on the benefits of turbo technology in order to enhance fuel efficiency and minimise emissions.
Turbochargers are rotary crushers that use exhaust gas to power them. They improve efficiency by pushing additional air into internal combustion.
Automobiles with turbocharged engines accounted for just 8% of the sales in 2010, but that figure has gradually increased. According to IBISWorld, continuous fuel-efficiency standards are fueling that demand. According to the market research organisation, turbos will rise at a 3% yearly rate between now and 2022.
That’s excellent news for Tier 1 suppliers like BorgWarner, Continental, and Honeywell, who manufacture the vast majority of turbochargers. In Franklin, Indiana, the business just established a new assembly factory.
“As emissions rules tighten, mature automobile markets such as the United States…are turning to turbochargers to assist deliver cleaner mobility,” says Olivier Rabiller, president and CEO of Honeywell Transportation Systems. “This is ushering in what we call the golden era of turbo.”
“With the capacity to reduce emission levels efficiency by 20% to 40% in petrol or diesel engine, turbocharging technology is a sensible choice for helping automakers meet stricter worldwide emissions regulations without losing performance,” says Rabiller.
“More powertrain reduction is likely in North America,” says Rabiller. “The current average engine size is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder.” As the region shifts from bigger high bypass engine to compact turbos, [our engineers] are striving to give more twin-scroll turbo technical advice, which pulls more performance from four-cylinder output characteristics.”
Experts are trying new materials, such as aluminum aluminide and high-strength polymers like nylon, that can tolerate greater exhaust gas temperatures while also reducing weight. They are also adjusting the inflow inclination and speed of the turbine wheel inlets.
Later turbocharger technologies will also have to fight new pollution regulations that may restrict engines from employing scavenging, which is a method that alters engine valve timing to enhance low-end torque.
