TURBOCHARGER INNOVATION

Oil leakage in a turbocharger is a failure condition that can result in decreased performance, increased oil consumption, and noncompliance with pollution regulations. Cummins’ most recent oil sealing invention eliminates these hazards by developing a more robust sealing system that complements other leading technologies created for Holset turbochargers.

Cummins Turbo Technologies’ game-changing oil sealing technology has been on the market for nine months. The innovative technique, which is presently undergoing worldwide patent application, applies to both on- and off-highway sectors.

The technique was presented in September 2019 at the 24th Supercharging Conference in Dresden in the whitepaper, “Development of an Improved Turbocharger Dynamic Seal,” and was pioneered by Matthew Purdey, group leader in Subsystems Engineering at CTT.

Customers demanded smaller engines with more power density and lower emissions, and the turbocharger remained one of the most critical parts of a vehicle’s driveshaft. As a result, Cummins has stayed committed to providing excellence to customers by always researching creative methods to increase turbocharger performance and by taking into account changes that influence durability, as well as performance and emission advantages. This innovative technology improves the oil sealing capabilities to provide clients with a broader variety of benefits.

benefits of the new oil sealing technology

The innovative Holset turbocharger sealing technology provides turbo downsizing, downsizing, and oil leakage avoidance for two-stage systems, as well as CO2 and NOx savings for other technologies. The technique has also enhanced the turbocharger’s heat management and durability. Furthermore, because of its durability, it has reduced the frequency of diesel engine maintenance.

Other important factors were considered throughout the research and development stages of the sealing technique. These include the ability to optimise the compressor stage diffuser and a push for deeper integration between the after treatment and turbocharger, an integration that has previously received substantial R&D from Cummins and is a key component of the Integrated Framework.

Cummins has over Sixty years of expertise producing Holset turbochargers and employs strict testing and repeated the analysis on new products and technologies in-house.

“The oil behaviour in the seal system was modelled using multi-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics. This resulted in a far more in-depth knowledge of the oil/gas interaction and physics at work. This better knowledge drove design advancements, resulting in an unrivalled performance for the new sealing technology,” stated Matt Franklin, Director Of Product Management & Marketing.
