Impact on turbocharging

The heat differential between the two drivetrain components also causes a variation in the materials used in turbochargers. To resist the severe thermal loading conditions, the turbocharger for gasoline applications requires more sophisticated materials. These turbochargers are usually made of special alloys including costly elements such as nickel.

Second, a complete water sleeve and an improved internal heat shield insulate heat transmission from the hot turbine region to the bearing housing from these high temperatures. This prevents damage to the bearing housing and bearing system while also maintaining the temperature below the oil coking limit (the point at which oil starts to crystallize and forms very hard black particles).

Furthermore, the temperature difference affects the relevant technology. Although a VG system is superior in terms of performance, it is difficult to maintain its operation over time in a severe gasoline application. A cooler diesel application, on the other hand, is easier on the overall system. This is the primary reason that all modern gasoline automobiles have a wastegate turbocharger and all diesel cars have a VG turbocharger.

Innovative technology

Since the diesel gate in 2015, the market for diesel-powered cars has been decreasing. The combustion process of a diesel engine is more prone to producing NOx. This necessitates the use of very specialized after-treatment systems (NOx trap, SCR) in order to comply with the most recent standards.

To meet future restrictions, gasoline-powered cars must also become more efficient. VG turbocharger applications are one answer to this. A VG system allows the turbine operating point to be constantly adjusted at all engine operating points. This guarantees that all components operate at their most efficiently, resulting in a more efficient engine overall.

Other sources of energy

So, for a turbocharged vehicle, are gasoline and diesel the only options? While new automobile types such as Hybrid electric vehicles and PHEVs necessitate new drive train ideas and therefore turbocharger systems such as e-assist and e-compressor, the fuels remain mostly gasoline and diesel. Many OEMs are experimenting with poorer grade gasoline as well as a gas with a greater ethanol content to see whether they can get the same engine performance. This places additional demands on the turbocharger. In the future, we’ll see whether any new fuel types upset the market and necessitate further turbocharger specifications.
