In terms of details, the first e-turbo system from BorgWarner uses 17 kilowatt at max power. Because 1 kW equals 1,000 watts, 17 kW corresponds to 17,000 W or about 22.8 horsepower. BorgWarner is experimenting with a 400/800-volt e-turbo that delivers 6 to 34 kW at peak power. That’s close to F1 efficiency—on the street. Having 48-volt systems already on the growth and increased 400-volt systems in use in some plug-in hybrids, electrically assisted turbochargers become a feasible option that does not need additional car development. But keep in mind that it needed a forced push in F1 racing to create e-turbos, much as the 1960s drive to be the first on the Moon pushed material science and computer technology throughout many unrelated sectors of technology. Who claims that racing doesn’t help the breed?

Garrett Motion Case Study

In a more realistic vehicle, a Garrett demonstration demonstrated significant improvement when converting from a conventional turbo to an e-turbo. Target torque was attained in 1 second at low engine speeds of 1,500 rpm, compared to 4.5 seconds on the current production model. Rated power rose by 16%, torque increased by 10.5 per cent, and acceleration time from 60 to 100 kph decreased by 25%, from 11 seconds to 8.8 seconds.

BorgWarner E-Turbo

BorgWarner put e-turbo technology to the test on a modified (2017) Porsche Boxster 718S with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that had previously been equipped with the normal factory VGT turbocharger. Like the F1, the e-turbo spins up the turbine shaft to offer an instant boost while also acting as a generator, turning heat energy into electricity and charging a storage battery. The battery can then power additional electric motor connected to the final drive, boosting the torque and power of the vehicle. Because there is no latency, the e-turbo is bigger than the ordinary conventional turbo it replaced, increasing power not only at the high end but across the whole engine operating range.
