Toyota patents V8 twin-turbo

Toyota has applied for a patent in the United States for a new twin-turbo V8 engine that may power the next Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series and Tundra pickup. Toyota, on the other hand, claims that the engine, which is likely to be a DOHC petrol V8 with a displacement of 4.0 litres, may also be manufactured in single-turbo form, with the turbocharger/s placed beside the cylinder block/s.

Surprisingly, the patent indicates that the new engine architecture may also be built-in V6 or inline four-cylinder or six-cylinder configuration and that it “has been detailed utilising the V-eight engine as an instance of the internal combustion engine.”

“Moreover, the cylinders do not have to be placed in a V-shape but might be organised in a line. Like an example, an internal combustion engine may be an in-line four-cylinder engine, an in-line six-cylinder engine, and something similar.”

Toyota’s long-running innately 5.0-litre V8 has been rumoured since 2017, while Lexus said in Dec 2019 that it was developing a twin-turbo V8 for its high-performance F cars.

In a late-2019 news release, Lexus stated that its LC racing vehicle will feature “a new fully V8 twin-turbo engine intended for use on upcoming road cars like as sports cars” ahead of the 2020 Nurburgring 24 Hour endurance race. The new Biturbo V8 engine is anticipated to produce up to 450kW of power and 750Nm of torque, surpassing not just the engine it replaces, but even the 310kW/600Nm 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 now powering the Lexus LS 500 limousine.

The new Biturbo V8 is also expected to power not just the future Lexus LX luxury SUV and the next Toyota Tundra pickup truck under discussion for Australia, but also a tough GR flagship for the next Toyota LandCruiser. The 2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series will be released in Australia later this year only with a contemporary circa-230kW/690kW 3.3-litre V6 turbo-diesel, which will eventually be accompanied by its first hybrid engine, built on the Biturbo 3.5-litre petrol V6 available in other countries in the new LC300.
