A turbocharger is a technology that uses forced induction to assist an engine to create more power and torque. A turbo sucks in air, chills it, and then forces more air into the engine than it would obtain from its conventional intake. There’s a lot more “Whee!” as a result. Between the engine and the exhaust is a turbocharger, which is a miniature turbine. A turbocharger, which is connected to both the engine and the air intake, uses the exhaust gases to spin the turbine, which forces more air into the engine and enhances the car’s power.
Difference Between Remanufactured & Reconditioned / Rebuild Turbos
Many consumers are perplexed by the distinction between remanufactured and repaired turbochargers, and mistakenly believe they are the same thing. We’ll look at the distinctions between remanufactured and repaired turbochargers, as well as why they’re different.
- Remanufactured turbo
Remanufacture refers to the process of restoring a turbo to as close to new as feasible. A remanufactured turbo has been thoroughly rebuilt to the same specifications as a brand new turbo. If the turbo has wearable components, they will be replaced automatically. For correct dimensional tolerances, all components are verified against original equipment specifications.
New or inspected used parts will be used as replacements. If the parts are new, they should be manufactured and tested according to the manufacturer’s requirements and original production standards. If the part has been used before, it should be inspected for wear or other flaws. In any case, the remanufactured turbo should meet OEM tolerances, durability, and quality standards.
The turbo compressor housing and turbine housing, as well as the vacuum or electronic actuator, are the only parts that can be reused. The internals of the Turbo CHRA, also known as the Turbocharger Cartridge, is replaced. A new Compressor Wheel, Seal Plate, Bearing Housing, Heat Shield, Turbine Shaft, and Wheel, as well as ALL new bearings and seals, make up a Turbo CHRA / Turbocharger Cartridge. Before being installed in the cleaned housings, this turbo CHRA is balanced and tested for noise and oil leaks, and then the turbo actuator is recalibrated.
- Reconditioned turbo or turbo rebuild
A turbo rebuild, also known as a reconditioned turbo, is when the entire turbocharger is stripped down to its components. Compressor Housing, Turbine Housing, Compressor Wheel, Turbine Shaft and Wheel Bearing Housing, Heat Shield, and Seal Plate are all tested for wear and damage before being dimensionally confirmed to be within OE tolerances. If not, the worn turbo parts are destroyed and fresh replacement turbo parts are installed. Utilized turbo bearings and seals should never be used to rebuild a reconditioned turbocharger. The turbo rebuild can begin once all reused turbo parts have been certified to be in good working order, and worn turbo parts have been discarded and replaced with new replacement turbo components.
All of the turbo components within the unit are equally worn before repair. Some of the turbo’s components may be new after rebuilding, while others may have come from a different used unit. Some components will remain from the original turbo unit. While the “used” components may still work and do not require replacement, they are worn to some extent.
Decision making between remanufacturing and reconditioning
