TWIN TURBO M POWER

Mitsubishi Turbocharger and Engine Europe provide its turbocharger technology to the new BMW M3 and M4 vehicles. The 3-litre S58 engine is outfitted with not one, but two single-scroll turbochargers to provide an additional boost to this powerful engine. BMW’s TwinPower turbocharged engines are frequently equipped with twin-scroll turbochargers, and with this 6-cylinder engine, a configuration of two single-scroll turbochargers was shown to be the optimum match.

On high-end gasoline engines with high output power demands, two turbochargers are often used. Furthermore, two turbochargers give greater transient responsiveness than, say, one large turbocharger. This is mostly due to the spinning assembly’s inertia growing exponentially with frame size. One turbocharger is intended for cylinders 1-3, while a second turbocharger is designed for cylinders 4-6 in this usage. The generated boost from both is collected and pushed through the vehicle’s condenser to ensure that the air is at the proper temperature before being drawn into the engine. Both of these turbochargers include wastegate systems that allow them to work independently and properly.

For the following reasons, the S58 turbochargers are designed as single-scroll turbochargers:

  • Each turbocharger is supplied by three cylinders, which is not a convenient multiple of two cylinders, which are typically split in a twin-scroll arrangement.
  • The engine’s combustion sequence already guarantees that exhaust gas pulses are supplied to turbochargers as effectively as feasible.
  • The design of the turbine housing is not so huge that the pulse energy is wasted owing to the enormous interior volume.

Sporty driving

The M3 and M4 vehicles are available in two output variants: standard and competitive. The standard will have 480hp and 550Nm of torque, while the competition will have 510hp and 650Nm of torque. This accelerates you from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. This is accomplished in 3.9 seconds using the competition model.

The “M Drift Analyzer” is an extra function for racing fans in the M3 and M4 vehicles. When you throw the automobile sideways, this function will calculate your drift. The automobile will also evaluate your drift on a scale of 1 to 5 stars and save it in the system so you can show it off to your friends.

While the overall trend is toward automated transmission, the manual transmission is still available in M vehicles. The manual transmission has a 6-speed gearbox, while the automatic transmission has an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission.

BMW M GmbH was established in 1972 as a commercial entity for the BMW brand’s athletic goods. The cars are frequently utilised in European motorsport championships, but they are also popular on the streets among enthusiasts of strong engines.
