Mercedes-AMG Benz’s performance car division has announced the development of a new electrically assisted exhaust-gas turbocharger that will feature on the company’s next generation of cars.
It is intended that Mercedes-High AMG’s Performance Powertrain division would replace the typical exhaust-gas turbochargers now used by AMG on both its 2.0L 4-cyl. and 2.0L 6-cyl. engines with useful to develop for the German automaker’s Formula 1 racing car engine.
The new turbo, which is claimed to be in the final stages of development, was specially engineered in conjunction with Garrett Motion and differs from the electronically assisted turbocharger in design and function.
Mercedes-AMG says that the new technology improves induction by installing a tiny electric motor on the turbocharger shaft, between the compressor wheel upon that fresh-air side.
The electric motor, which is powered by a 48V power supply, powers the compressor wheel before the entrance of exhaust-gas flow, therefore reducing turbo lag. Mercedes-AMG claims that its new turbocharger can run at up to 170,000 rpm, offering a greater rate of airflow than the company’s previous turbocharging technology. The redesigned turbo, electric motor, and power electronics system are connected to the combustion engine’s cooling system.
Mercedes-AMG claims that its new turbocharger can run at up to 170,000 rpm, offering a greater rate of airflow than the company’s previous turbocharging technology. “We are complementing our modular technology and customising it to our performance requirements with this move. With a first step, we will use an electrified turbocharger, which is an instance of Formula 1 technology being applied to the road, to push turbocharged combustion engines to previously inaccessible levels.”
While no more technical information regarding the new system has been released, Mercedes-AMG claims that the new electric-assisted exhaust-gas turbocharger “significantly enhances responsiveness from idle speed as well as over the whole engine speed range.”

Furthermore, it says that the new turbocharger provides greater torque at lower engine speeds, resulting in “optimised acceleration capabilities from standstill and increased agility.”
