Electric turbocharger technology in Mercedes

Electric turbocharger

Mercedes-AMG Benz’s performance division has unveiled a new electrically assisted exhaust gas turbocharger technology that will debut on the company’s next generation of vehicles. It is intended to replace AMG’s current flue gases turbo setups on both its 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 4.0-litre V8 engines, which are believed to be based on techniques developed by AMG’s Advanced Engine division for Mercedes’ Formula One engine.

The new turbocharger, which is said to be in the final phases of development, was conceived and engineered in collaboration with Garrett Motion and is said to operate differently from the electric-powered exhaust-gas turbocharger used on AMGs.Electric turbocharger

The new technique utilises a tiny electric motor integrated on the turbocharger shaft, between the centrifugal compressor on the clean side and the turbine wheel on the emissions side, to improve induction. The motor, which is powered by a 48V electrical system, drives the compressor wheel before the entrance of the exhaust manifold, therefore reducing turbo lag.

Mercedes-AMG claims that its new turbocharger can work at up to 1,70,000rpm, resulting in a considerably greater rate of airflow. The new electric invention of the electric electronics system is linked to the cooling circuit of the combustion engine.

“We have clearly stated our ambitions for an electric future,” said Tobias Moers, the outgoing chairman of AMG. “We are deliberately augmenting our modular technology and adapting it to our performance objectives with this move. As a first step, we will use an electrified turbocharger, which is an example of Formula 1 technology being translated to the road, and with which we will push turbocharged combustion engines too hard to achieve levels.”

Although Mercedes-AMG has not revealed any further technical details about the new system, the company claims that the new battery-powered exhaust-gas turbo “substantially enhances responsiveness from idle speed as well as over the whole engine speed range.” Furthermore, it says that the new turbocharger “enables greater torque at reduced engine speeds,” resulting in “improved acceleration capabilities from standstill and increased agility.”
