Borg Warner has secured a global agreement to offer an important European OEM with its unique e-Turbo TM technology for high voltage hybrid passenger cars.
BorgWarner’s innovative electric boosting technology improves engine economy and performance while also allowing the automaker to fulfill more stringent pollution requirements. This is the first time the business has operated a high-voltage hybrid vehicle with an electrical turbocharge.

The e-Turbo is a mechanical turbocharger with an ultra-high-speed electric motor directly connected to the shaft. Customers can choose between integrated and semi-integrated power electronics. Along with the usual turbocharger benefits, BorgWarner’s system includes electric boost assistance for improved responsiveness. It provides more than 200 percent quicker transient boost response as well as a 50% decrease in time-to-torque, almost eliminating turbo lag and aiding engine downsizing. Specially adapted for Miller cycle motor concepts, this electrified turbocharger provides increased fuel efficiency and less pollution without compromising performance.
The e-Turbo from BorgWarner may also function as a generator, collecting extra exhaust energy and converting it to electrical energy. Repurposing the energy is useful for auxiliary power or battery charging, allowing for the usage of lower battery size. The boost technology is also capable of reducing emissions via after-treatment management and the precise regulation of the air/fuel ratio. The e-Turbo facilitates on-demand exhaust gas recirculation by having the capacity to raise engine backpressure to minimize emissions.
Production of high-voltage hybrid vehicles using BorgWarner’s electrified turbocharger is set to commence in September 2023.
