Next Boosting Technology for Turbochargers

The future of boosting is discussed in Engine Technology International. Using turbochargers or superchargers was formerly considered an exotic performance technique; nevertheless, turbocharging has now become the default state for all diesel engines and the bulk of today’s gasoline engines.

Both technologies appear to be boosting the future, with turbocharger technology proceeding on a similar path of advancement. VTG is already popular in smaller diesel automobiles, and two-stage turbo systems are making inroads into that sector due to the cost savings they provide.

The primary goal of turbocharging research and development has been to minimise friction and inertia to enhance responsiveness and driveability. Variable turbine geometry has optimised the compressor responsiveness at low engine rpm when exhaust gas energy is low, while still supplying adequate air at full load.

For many years, premium diesel has used two-stage turbocharging. When exhaust energy is minimal, a smaller turbo provides good responsiveness at low engine speeds, but a larger turbo takes over at a high load to fulfil air mass requirements for high power and torque production. VTG is still a bit of a rarity on gasoline engines, owing to the high temperatures required, but it is making a cameo.
