Sometimes the owner enters the business by truck saying that the turbocharger is faulty. While it may be true, the turbo has also been an innocent victim every conceivable, and there are alternate causes for the turbo to go wrong.
John Ferry, Turbo Solutions CEO, says turbochargers in the service shops have been an issue for over 10 years and education continues in the sector. Ferry adds turbochargers “have rolled in” when requirements were established to lower greenhouse gas emissions and increase fuel efficiency. The complicated cost of simple turbos was six times more than their predecessors, with variable geometry turbos (VGT).
Service providers are fortunate enough to observe a disgruntled client complaining about the same problem in a few months without examining other systems.
“Everyone should realize that turbo loader is a component of a sophisticated system and you want to ensure that the other components operate correctly and are maintained properly if there are any problems,” explains Ferry.
“The turbo loaders are precise machines and they feature a rotor system capable of spinning up to 200,000 rotations, depending on the size of the turbo,” Peter Ventress, senior service engineer of Cummins’ turbo loading company says. So they tend to go bad rapidly if things go wrong.
While a technician would be tempted to go straight to the turbocharger, Ventress believes it is important to first perform a careful evaluation of a whole engine. In order to understand a turbo failure, its fundamental cause has to be identified and eliminated.
Ventress advises technicians should examine all piping, clamps, oil and water lines, after-packaging, the condition of the oil and air filters, and check electric connections for damage while examining the engine. Furthermore, all links should be very close, since “we don’t want oil, fuel oil, air or coolant leaks,” he explains.
One of the most typical issues is to obtain back turbochargers, which is not incorrect.
“We receive the same thing, we get the same thing. This is known as misdiagnosis,” explains Ferry. “If you have a system problem and you have no engine power and the first thing you do as a reflex is to pull the turbo and change it, it is quite likely that you will still be faced with the same problem. So what do you do, take your chance and return it to warranty? This is also a significant issue.”
