
Problems in 2.0 Ecoboost Engine
The 2.0L EcoBoost is a turbocharged, inline-4 cylinder direct injection gas engine introduced by Ford in 2010. The engine, which generates 200-252hp and 221-270lb-ft of torque, combines modest power with exceptional fuel efficiency.
The 2.0 EB is built around a 2.0L Mazda L-series engine block. In 2015, the 2.0 EcoBoost received a significant update. Ford gave the 2.0 a major facelift in 2015 to enhance performance and fuel economy. The actual reason for the new engine is because the Ford/Mazda partnership has ended, requiring Ford to build its own 2.0 EB engine.
The new aluminium block, cylinder head with incorporated exhaust manifold, and twin-scroll turbocharger were all added to the 2nd Generation model. As a result, gas mileage improved and low-end torque increased, resulting in a more cost-effective vehicle.
- Cracked Exhaust Manifold
The stainless steel manifold is inserted into the cylinder head right away. Exhaust gas temperatures can reach excessive levels when hauling or driving up a slope. Because of the constant heat cycles created by engines and the varying temperatures, the stainless steel exhaust manifold strains and shrinks. Hairline fractures in the exhaust manifold can occur when constant expansion and contraction are coupled with a vibrating engine.
When an exhaust manifold fails and air leaks out of the crack rather than flowing out of the exhaust, it is damaging to the environment and causes drivability issues. Due to the lack of back-pressure required for turbochargers to perform properly, the turbo needs to work extra hard to provide typical power levels.
- Turbo/Boost Control Solenoid Failure
When the boost solenoid fails, the turbo may create too much or too little boost about the amount of pressure applied to the accelerator pedal.
Because boost solenoids are electrical, they naturally wear down over time and can fail due to corroding wires, dirt buildup, water, and a variety of other natural wear and tear reasons. However, solenoids typically survive around 10 years or so in other vehicles, and in the 2.0 EcoBoost, they have been known to fail half that time or around 50k-80k miles.
- Carbon Build-up
Carbon build-up affects the 2.0 EB, as it does all direct injection engines. In DI engines, fuel injectors provide fuel directly to the cylinders. Fuel is strongly pressured when it passes through the intake manifold, which helps to keep the engine cool. Direct injection, on the other hand, does away with the requirement for intake valves because the gasoline is completely bypassed.
