
Cadillac launches its first-ever twin-turbo V-8 engine today, ushering in a new chapter in the brand’s high-performance history. It serves as the focus of Cadillac’s new CT6-V, an exciting sports sedan imbued with DNA from the company’s world-renowned racing programme.
It draws on Cadillac’s long-standing turbocharging expertise while breaking new ground with unique innovations that offer excellent performance and refinement. The Twin Turbo V-8 has a “hot V” arrangement that flips the traditional layout of the cylinder heads’ inlet and outlet systems to position the turbochargers at the engine’s pinnacle — in the trough between the heads — to reduce turbo disparity and decrease total engine tin cans. 
The pressurised air charge enters the cylinder heads via ports at the top of the engine, and the exhaust leaves through ports on the bottom beyond the heads into funnels attached to the turbochargers in a conventional turbocharged engine.
The intake-charged air comes through the bottom beyond the heads and escapes through the top inside — where the turbochargers are connected with the exhaust funnels — for rapid spool-up and more instantaneous power delivery with Cadillac’s revolutionary hot V architecture. The design also enables the catalytic converters to be mounted closer together for more economical packing.

SMALL DISPLACEMENT
The core of the new Cadillac Twin-Turbo V-8 is an all-new, robust and lightweight aluminium cylinder block, which contains an equally robust and lightweight rotating assembly comprised of a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel joints, and high-strength aluminium pistons. Its relatively tiny bore dimension allows for a decrease in the size and mass of the pistons, improving the engine’s shape to match the engine’s low-inertia, twin-scroll turbochargers’ fast-rev capabilities.
The result is outstanding response and power immediacy across the rpm range. The turbochargers generate 20 pounds of boost and are paired with electronic diverter valve control for more accurate boost management and rapid torque generation. 90% of the engine’s peak torque is accessible at only 2000 rpm and is maintained until 5200 rpm for a comfortable, practically limitless power reserve.
