What exactly is a Supercharger?

There is an air compressor design with the supercharger that increases the density and pressure of the air forced into an internal combustion engine. Every time the engine runs, it gets more oxygen, which helps it burn more fuel and produce more power.

 

The crankshaft acts as a power source for the supercharger’s belt, shaft, chain, or gear.

The Supercharger’s Origins

Francis Marion Roots and Philander Roots invented a blast furnace air mover in 1860 and had it patent protected. At the time, the Roots brothers in Indiana owned Roots Blower Company. In 1879, Dugald Clerk created the world’s first engine supercharger. Then, in 1885, Gottlieb Daimler applied for a patent on a supercharged internal combustion engine.

 

The centrifugal supercharger was developed by Louis Renault and patented in 1902 under his name. Pottstown, Pennsylvania, is home to one of the first racecars to use a supercharger. Designed and built by Lee Chadwick in 1908, this car was capable of speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Mercedes built the first mass-produced supercharged car in 1921. A “Kompressor” model was created, and Mercedes-Benz continues to use it.

Types of Supercharger

There are numerous different kinds of superchargers available. A fixed volume of air is delivered with each revolution by a positive displacement pump. Roots, sliding vane, Lysholm twin-screen, and scroll-type pumps are examples of positive-displacement designs. The high helix root supercharger is a component of the root supercharger that generates external compression.

 

Externally compressed positive-displacement superchargers are available, as are internally compressed versions. The pump transfers ambient pressure air via external compression. When the engine is boosted, the air downstream of the supercharger is compressed externally.

Internal compression technology allows the supercharger to compress air as close as possible to peak boost pressure. As a result, there is virtually no backflow into the engine. The compression ratio can be easily matched to the proposed boost pressure because of the internal design’s efficiency.

 

Additionally, centrifugal superchargers are an option. A belt-drive connects the wheels to the engine.
