Turbochargers and superchargers are often misunderstood when discussing vehicle performance. When you compare them side by side, you’ll see just how drastically different they are. What is a turbo?

Forced induction is achieved by using a turbocharger, which is sometimes known as a turbo. Because it forces more compressed air into the combustion chamber, this boosts the power and efficiency of the internal combustion engine.

In a naturally aspirated engine, adding air through the compressor boosts performance. More air means more gasoline, and the reverse is true.

What’s perplexing is that turbosuperchargers used to be the term for turbochargers. During this time, all forced induction devices were considered superchargers. Today, the term “supercharger” refers solely to mechanically driven forced induction systems.

There are turbochargers everywhere: in vehicles, trucks, planes, and even construction equipment.

Turbochargers in Automotive History

With his ingenious gear-driven pump, Gottlieb Daimler pioneered forced induction into the internal combustion engine.. Despite the fact that he received a patent for his invention in 1905, it would be another two decades before his ideas were put to use.

He worked on passenger ships for the German Ministry of Transport during that time. His turbochargers boosted the power of the ships’ twin 10-cylinder diesel engines to almost 2,000 horsepower.

Renault engines were also used in certain French fighters during World War I, with the design being copied by the Germans. On his V12 Liberty engine, Sanford Alexander Moss demonstrated the effectiveness of a turbocharger as early as 1918. To demonstrate his point, he took the engine to Colorado’s 14,000-foot Pikes Peak.

During the 1920s, turbochargers found their way into everything from airplanes to trains to ships. These days, you’ll find them in a wide range of business and personal vehicles, particularly those with smaller engines. That’s because they have a lot of torque and power but emit very little pollution.

What is a twin-turbo?

We’ve got the lowdown on the differences between a supercharger and a double turbocharger. It’s also known as a bi-turbo since it has two separate turbochargers that can function in tandem or sequentially.

When they’re connected in series, each one gets half of the exhaust. At low speeds, one of the turbochargers operates while the other tackles a certain load in succession. When it comes to diesel engines, you’ll see both the twin-turbo and boxer/V-shape designs.

A dual-turbo is not the same as a twincharger. The term “twin charging” refers to an engine with a turbocharger and a supercharger, which can be found on various Volvo models.
