Overspeeding

When a turbo is pushed beyond its compressor map, that may or may not provide an additional boost, but it nearly always produces excess drive pressure, forcing the shaft to experience greater speed than it was designed to manage. When the engine overheats, the turbine wheel is usually the first part to break, and we’ve seen a few come apart and exit the tailpipe at the speed of light. Overspeed circumstances, in particular, are quite prevalent on high-performance diesel.

SOLUTION: Maintain your turbo’s increase pressure ratio as near to 1:1 as feasible, which may necessitate operating a wastegate to bleed off extra drive pressure or expanding up the exhaust flow via a bigger turbine housing.

Foreign Object Damage

When a turbocharger consumes something, whether it’s trash, soot, a work cloth, or a nail left in the intake, the consequences may be devastating. Unfortunately, exterior debris that makes its way throughout the blades of a compressor wheel is responsible for 80% of all turbo malfunctions. When this occurs, the top portion of the compressor wheel’s blades will show signs of contact or scorching from the object(s), and the inducer bore may show impact or scarring symptoms.

What is the most typical reason for debris penetrating a turbo? A clogged air filter. That’s right, failing to maintain one of your vehicle’s most basic components may cost you a four-digit sum, and even a five-digit sum if debris gets into the engine. Fortunately, because most current turbocharged applications use an intercooler to reduce intake temperatures, it frequently serves as a catch-all for compressor wheel pieces.

SOLUTION: Run a quality air filter including outerwear, clean it if it’s recyclable, or change it at the appropriate period if it’s replaceable.

Leaks from Seals

Most contemporary turbochargers employ dynamic seals (rather than carbon seals), which prevent the oil delivered to the central section from entering the intake or exhaust side of the turbo. When the middle portion gets excessively pressured, it might force oil into the turbo’s intake and/or exhaust side.

SOLUTION: Consider upgrading to a better crankcase airflow or a dry-sump oiling system if you’re experiencing increased crankcase pressure or oil pressure as a consequence of high horsepower usage. If you’re pumping oil from an outdated turbocharger, it could be time for a rebuild.

Failure of a Thrust Bearing

The thrust bearing is closest to the compressor wheel. Its role is to limit end play. Because this bearing is supported by a small layer of oil between it and the shaft, it is critical that the bearing not come into contact with the shaft. When a thrust bearing makes contact, failure is typically imminent. When the thrust bearing fails, wheel-to-housing contact is inevitable. When a turbo is outfitted with an aftermarket compressor wheel, the lifespan of a 270-degree thrust bearing is significantly reduced.

SOLUTION: Add a 360-degree thrust bearing to your turbo for further security, or select a 360-degree thrust choice when buying a new one.
