
There are indicators to watch — and to listen — to assist determine if and what might cause a turbo polymer to be damaged. Among the alarm indications, specialists believe a few come up most regularly to solve possible turbocharger problems.
One of these is power loss, whether it is torque enough to move their load, or power enough to reach the cruise speed they desire, explains Tim Golema.
“It may be the shortage of air and simple as a cleaner, but the turbocharger will probably be at fault,” explains Golema.
Other perpetrators include, in addition to the unclean air filter, collapsed upstream ducts limiting air to the compressor as well as a limitation to the exhaust system such as an obstructed catalytic converter, according to BorgWarner, senior appliance engineer Seth Temple. “A high limit on exhaust emissions might lead to power loss,” he added.
The acoustic noise or a change in the sound of the turbocharger is another indicator to take into consideration.
‘For example, a turbo will create a different sound, if a turbocharged turbo is out of balance or if a turbo has been damaged and its blade chipped, it may change its pitch,’ adds Temple.
Inadequate oil may cause the turbocharger to warm up and create another sound, adds Golema, who recommends checking if the turbo oil flow is not obstructed.
While hearing the turbocharger might help a technician identify the problem, Golema notes that it can be a difficult idea to discover a turbo problem by sound.
“Noise is a technique to identify a problem, but you must find an odd pitch. You could assume it’s turbocharger sound if it’s a belt sound, a compressor for air conditioning or other equipment on the vehicle,” he explains.
Smoke, its hue, and its position are other indices of how the turbocharger might cause problems or problems with a second element of the truck.
Golema said that “black stack,” black smoke from the exhaust, is a fairly typical indication. The fuel status is excessively rich or the turbocharger is inefficient two possible explanations.
If the fuel is high, the turbo does not provide the airflow to keep the right air/fuel ratio, explains Temple.
“You must figure out why the air is not. Does anything leaking on the side of the turbine not have sufficient power to operate the compressor, or does it harm the compressor? Temple says.
Blue tailpipe smoke might represent a leach of oil on the turbocharger side of the compressor. Additional blue smoke causes include filthy air filter system, clutched, drained or twisted ventilation of the crankcase or coke, and sludge in the middle of turbocharger housing.
Temple adds, if smoke is produced from below the hood, an oil leak might be caused by a limited oil drain or excessive blow-up at the turbine end of the turbocharger.
Experts believe that turbochargers are highly sensitive to soot damage and damages to foreign objects (FOID). It’s a significant problem in many ways.
If the diesel particulate filter and the after-treatment system, in general, are not operating or maintained properly, for example, back pressures are produced and soot is generated inside the turbocharger. The soot can avoid opening and shutting the vanes within the turbo, Ferry explains.
“If you have a faulty valve that becomes all carbonated, little carbon parts can break off and get through the turbocharger. It will kill the VGT turbo early if you have any type of metal, dust, or carbon through,” he adds.
“The therapy is to work with turbo,” explains Temple. Temple. It does not prolong a turbo’s life. It can stress the turbo more if any, but the emissions are part and parcel of the system.”
