Around a month ago, we learned about an intriguing new turbocharger product line from Borg Warner that was due to be released later this year. The rumors aroused our attention enough to keep us waiting to see what Borg Warner was up to while we were developing our Lotus forced induction systems around Garrett turbochargers.
The reports were genuine, and now Borg Warner has permitted their distributors to go public with information on the innovative new turbochargers they are launching. The Borg Warner EFR turbochargers are a highly anticipated new addition to the aftermarket turbocharger sector. These turbochargers were designed from the bottom up with the automotive aftermarket in mind.

Heat Resistant Turbine Housings
The use of investment cast stainless steel turbine housings increases durability and provides a very smooth internal flow channel. Thin walls are used in turbine housings to minimize weight and thermal inertia.
Low Inertia Turbine Wheel
The Gamma-Ti turbine wheel reduces turbine inertia by about 50%, significantly increasing turbo responsiveness. The exducer diameter of turbines ranges from 55 to 80mm.
High Turbine Efficiency
The “Superback” and “Fullback” back-disk geometries provide extremely high efficiency. The Superback design adds a curved profile to the back disk, which reduces centrifugal stress and allows for faster rotational speeds.
Flexible Compressor Cover
The EFR turbo “big” cover includes a dual-machined exit for both hose and v-band connections.
Enhanced Turbo Response
A dual-row ball bearing is used in EFR turbochargers. This bearing arrangement reduces friction significantly at low turbo speeds, helping to enhance turbo responsiveness. The metal cage extended the life of the ball bearing assembly.
Simplified Installation
A compressor recirculation valve (CRV) is included to assist prevent compressor surge and backflow during a throttle lift event. This functionality simplifies the installation process and reduces the overall system installation cost.
Sensor mounting convenience
Every compressor cover includes facilities for attaching a speed sensor. Speed sensors are available individually.
Forged Milled Compressor Wheels (FMW)
EFR turbos have wheels that are entirely machined from forged aluminum, which is usually referred to as “billet.” Cut from bespoke forgings, their strength exceeds that of standard bar stock and even outperforms the material characteristics of an aluminum casting.
Adjustable Wastegate
Wastegate EFR versions with adjustable wastegates available in three different canister sizes make manufacturing and installation easier.
Ease of Orientation
The wastegate bracket to bearing housing attachment configuration allows for more turbo orientation freedom.
High Flow Wastegates
Large wastegate ports built specifically for wastegate EFR turbos allow them to handle the flow needs of high-performance applications.
